Seamless Terrazzo-Inspired Surfaces for Contemporary Educational Interiors

The London School of Economics project brings together architectural concrete, sculptural geometry and bespoke terrazzo to create a bold contemporary educational environment in the heart of London. Installed by Lazenby Contracts using Ideal Work Lixio® Plus, the scheme showcases patterned terrazzo using a bespoke choice of Italian marbles.

Defined by exposed concrete structures, sweeping staircases and dramatic angular forms, the interior architecture balances robustness with refinement. The Lixio® Plus elements complement this approach perfectly, introducing texture, depth and tonal variation while maintaining the durability required for high-traffic educational spaces.

Across the main circulation areas, bespoke terrazzo flooring creates movement and rhythm through a carefully composed arrangement of contrasting tones and geometric layouts. The contrast between lighter and darker aggregate blends helps define routes and gathering points while enhancing the scale of the expansive open-plan interiors. The seamless finish is shown to full advantage due to the size and scale of the building.

The project extends beyond the floor plane, with Lixio® + also applied to integrated seating and staircase surfaces to create continuity throughout the scheme. The monolithic benches positioned along the glazed perimeter soften the rawness of the concrete frame while introducing practical communal seating areas within the public spaces. Meanwhile, the terrazzo stair finishes bring tactility and visual cohesion to the dramatic circulation routes that connect the different levels of the building.

Combining contemporary aesthetics with exceptional durability, Ideal Work’s authentic Italian terrazzo creates an environment that feels both functional and timeless for this illustrious place of learning.
