Seamless Microcement Staircase for Contemporary Residential Interiors
Located within a contemporary private residence in London, this striking floating staircase installation demonstrates how seamless surface finishes can transform a functional architectural feature into the defining focal point of a home. Using Ideal Work Microtopping®, the staircase introduces a refined monolithic aesthetic that enhances the sense of openness, light and architectural precision throughout the interior.
Installed by Polished Concrete Interiors (Danny Wild), the staircase was finished in Smoke, creating a soft mineral appearance with subtle tonal movement that complements the calm neutral palette of the surrounding space. Applied continuously across the treads, risers and landings, the seamless microcement finish reinforces the sculptural geometry of the staircase while eliminating visual interruptions and joints.
The cantilevered construction gives the staircase a dramatic floating effect, further amplified by frameless structural glass balustrades and integrated linear lighting. The combination of crisp detailing, concealed structure and continuous surface treatment creates a staircase that appears both lightweight and highly engineered, balancing minimalism with strong architectural presence.
Microtopping® was selected for its versatility and ability to achieve a seamless finish across complex forms and vertical surfaces without compromising on durability or practicality. The material’s tactile texture softens the sharp geometry of the staircase while maintaining the clean contemporary language of the wider interior design scheme.
Viewed from below, the staircase takes on an almost sculptural quality, with the continuous microcement finish emphasising the rhythm and repetition of the stepped form. The result is a highly resolved residential interior feature that combines craftsmanship, architectural detailing and seamless contemporary surface design into one cohesive statement piece.
